To develop facilities that are accessible to all residents and serve all of New Tecumseth.

Action Items:
Create a committee to assess what facilities exist and what is needed; conduct focus groups to review/recommend results; research the participation levels of the different activities in the community.

Research other municipalities of equal comparison and design a formula to ensure that all facilities are proportionately funded.

Expand the Parks and Recreation Department to include a wider range of activities; offer activities other than sports (dancing, music); coordinate programs for youth and seniors at the same time (tai chi, painting, community theatre); coordinate services between communities to reduce duplication.

Approach existing businesses with recreation facilities to share with the community during slow usage periods.

Don't build all new facilities in one area; ensure there are transportation connections to facilities.

Encourage public/private partnerships; attract a recreation facility that is operated from a business standpoint (e.g. YMCA) and is accessible to the whole community.

Recreational activities should be run by the Town of New Tecumseth as opposed to individual organizations; Build an affordable, accessible community centre (pool, arena, arts centre etc).

Consider more diverse and affordable use of local arenas; display schedules of events at arenas so that we know when space is available for other uses.

Build and/or enlarge swimming facilities to accommodate a larger section of community.

Create a walking/hiking trail (no vehicles) from Alliston to Earl Rowe Provincial Park along the Boyne River; improve and maintain existing trails; create a network of walking trails linking each village; create a directory of trails that includes points of interest.

Establish a working group of potential partners and interested residents, to investigate steps necessary to establish universally affordable programs, and ensure access for all; provide geared-to income memberships to sports; acquire subsidies for recreation/sports for low-income families; provide affordable camp programs.

Develop facilities for the arts which are accessible and affordable; better utilization of the Gibson Community Arts and Cultural Centre.

Create a registry to coordinate groups and organizations that need help, with students who need to achieve their community service hours; utilize high school students to clean up green spaces, etc.

Establish high schools that better accommodate local students; design buildings so that space is more efficiently used by the whole community (seniors, youth) for more than education; build around a park: grow gardens, community library, hockey rinks, auditorium etc.

Create scholarships for recreational and cultural volunteers.
