South Simcoe Green Transition

Partners:Community Adjustment Fund, FED DEV Ontario, York University, MITRACS Accelerate Program, Private Sector, South Simcoe Economic Alliance, and Nottawasaga Futures
Objectives:The South Simcoe Green Business Transformation Project is a job creation and business retention and expansion project. Through sustainable business practices such as waste reduction, heat recovery, development of supply chain networks, retooling and engineering; the project will create opportunities for local business to save on operation costs and invest in human resources management. The project will be grounded in best practice and current knowledge/research in the fields of environmentally sustainable business practices and innovation for a green economy. Included in the network are: researchers, graduate students, NGOs, CED practitioners, local businesses and officials from all levels of government.
Status:

Project Coordinator hired. Two interns were identified (Michael Weaver and Susan Swail) and research objectives approved.

Intern applications to MITACS have been approved

JRB&Associates  (Iowa State University, Center for Industrial Research and Service) delivered Lean and Green consultant training to 13 local professionals. Phase II of the training (on site training at a local manufacturer) will occur in early 2010.

A letter to businesses has been developed and will be mailed in early December to introduce this initiative. A press conference to introduce the program is being coordinated for late January.

Additional initiatives are being planned for January and February (e.g., retail supplier chain network, Agriculture energy reduction forum).

Deputations to introduce the program to local municipalities have been made to two councils with the remaining three to be held in January. Information sessions will be held with local business associations, community organizations and local businesses in early February.

A proposal is being developed for Phase II.
