Goals: To conserve soil, water, and air quality.
To demonstrate good land stewardship practices.
Action Items: Continue to promote Pitch-In Week. Clear ditches of refuse and litter to eliminate ponding of waterand allow for proper drainage. Encourage landowners' participation in woodlot managementprograms, particularly for marginal lands; invite guest speakersand foresters to speak on the value of forestry management anddifferent tree species.
Create partnerships with the Nottawasaga Valley Conservation Authority to protect river systems. Actively promote the implementation of Best Management Practices to producer groups and relatedindustry; incorporate a Best Management Plan workshopor a speaker into Simcoe County Farmers Week days(beef, dairy, crop, swine); boost educational programs inschools; promote the cost benefits of "new" Best Management Plans. Investigate innovative techniques to identify new Best Management Practices.
Improve water quality by restricting livestock access to waterways, developing manure storage facilities, and/orminimizing cropland erosion.
Identify and establish a "bank" of baseline data (benchmarks) for:
- Water quality/quantity,
- Landfill site locations,
- Biosolid spreading sites,
- Soil fertility, and
- Habitat features.
Encourage all "nutrient users" to prepare a Nutrient Management Plan.
